The Masai (Maasai)
The
Masai are an African tribe whose name is well-known to the Western world. They have resisted changing their way of life, and continue to live their traditional lifestyle as they have for centuries.
Head-shaving is an important part of several different aspects of Masai life. The following links each describe various aspects of head-shaving in Masai culture, and provide other information about these interesting people.

Wear sunscreen
A few years ago, Mary Schmich wrote a
newspaper column in which she pretended to give a commencement address to a graduating class. It was a pretty cool column, and started getting distrubuted over the Internet, although at first people were saying that it was a real commencement address done by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. Credit was eventually sorted out, and it even became a song that was popular for a short while.
Though the column was wide-ranging, there's one piece of advice that almost everyone remembered:
wear sunscreen.

A vacation from shaving; and a travel question
In a
previous ShaverLog article, I mentioned the many advantages of stubble versus smooth. Right at the moment, I'm putting those advantages to the test.
I'm currently taking a short vacation in beautiful
Pennsylvania, and while I'm here, I'm letting the stubble grow out. Since I'm only here for about a week, my hair won't really be very long when I get back home, but in the meantime, I can spend more time doing vacation-y things, and spend less time in the bathroom.

Some schools ban shaved heads
I've always considered a shaved head to be just another hairstyle choice, and thus to be the kind of thing that people shouldn't worry about too much. That's just my opinion, and it's one that a lot of people apparently don't agree with.
Some people consider certain hairstyles (including shaved heads) to be a sign of potential trouble, or even rebelliousness. And some organizations that have a strong interest in making people conform do what they can to discourage anything outside the mainstream.
Consider the following examples of rules against headshaving, taken from the websites of a number of different schools (all situated in the United States).

The advantages of stubble
Dave Attell is a pretty funny guy. He's got a show called
Insomniac that I enjoy watching. His humour can be a bit coarse at times, and so can his head.
Dave shaves his head, but he doesn't shave it all the way down. It's just really, really short. Stubble-length hair. And it suits him.

Shaving heads for charity
It's become quite popular in recent years for charities, hospitals, sports teams, and other groups to hold sponsored headshaves to raise money. People donate money, and those collecting sponsorships then have their heads shaved publicly.
Personally, I'm all for it. An organization raises some much-needed funding, and several people show off their craniums and try out a new style. It's a win-win situation.

Taking photos
One thing that can sometimes be annoying about my hairstyle is that photographs don't always turn out very good.
Several years ago, I was at a wedding photo-shoot that was done outside. I had shaved that morning, and my head was as smooth and reflective as it could be. We posed for several pictures against 2 or 3 different backgrounds. The photographer was a professional.
When we got the photos back, I was surprised to find that when in several pictures, my head seemed to blend in to the sky; it was hard to tell where my head ended and the sky began. While it posed a neat philosophical question, the photograph itself didn't look good as a result.
