Advice for people with acne and razor bumps
Many head-shavers experience razor bumps and other hair- and skin-related problems. It can be difficult to find a way to shave comfortably.
Mark Stelmach experienced both acne and razor bumps when he shaved his head. Either on their own is bad enough; in combination it's even worse. He was kind enough to share his advice with us here.
After initial huge problems shaving my head, and with your site's help, things are 100% better. I have figured out what works for me. So here are my bits of advice:
- Forget cheap razors. Drop the money on a Mach 3 or some similar razor and expensive cartridges. Well worth the money.
- I have learned shaving in the shower works best for me. Shampoo and condition your hair, or what is left of it. Then massage the lotion into your head.
- Go slowly and with the grain. With a nice razor, i can even go over parts of my head 5 or 6 times, though I do not suggest it.
- I have been using "Bump Fighter" gel for shaving. After I shave I use "Bump Stopper-2, Double Strength" on my neck and back of my head . Both are available over the counter.
- When shaving, I use VERY hot shower water. When done, I place my head and face under VERY cold shower water for around a minute.
- I was experiencing bad bumps or acne on my head for the last few years due to God knows what. This was before I ever even thought about shaving my head. Therefore, when I did shave my head, it just really exacerbated my acne problem, plus razor bumps occurred. It was terrible. So, I went to the doctor, and was prescribed "Elocon Lotion" for my head acne, or whatever it was. People also use it for exema. It WORKS. "Elocon" is not used for my razor bumps. (This acne occured on the very top of my head.)
- For me, it was very important to follow my "Bump Stopper-2" and "Elocon Lotion" directions exactly as written. Be patient. If directions are followed, results will happen. It will not happen overnight. But in a few weeks, I saw huge results.
Hope I have helped,
Sincerely,
Mark
Thanks for the comments and advice, Mark.
Of course, not everyone will necessarily get the same results that Mark did, but hopefully, some people may find this advice helpful.

I had some acne and minor skin irritations before I began shaving my head. I attribute this to my living in a very hot and humid area, and the build up of perspiration in my hair throughout the day, caused conditions that made my skin prone to maladies of this sort.
I noticed that when I began shaving my head my skin cleared up immediately. It is simply a cleaner more hygienic style; I wish I had done it sooner.
I agree. I have a skin condition all over my body and am forced to shave most of it, not by choice. Shaving did more than all the skin medications the doctors gave me ever did. I still have not gotten up the nerve to shave my scalp yet(that is about the only part of me left not shaven)and am hoping this website will give me the balls to do it (: .
85 % of Caucasian youth between 14 and 28 years have acne due to a change in body chemistry. About 85 % African Americans have probems with ingrown hairs because it curls as it grows and most shaving peparations do not help the shaving process so that the hair is cut before it reaches the skin surface and give an ultra smooth surface as is recommended by doctors. THE RAZOR IS NOT A FACTOR. With a good shaving prepration a shave as close as you get with a depilatory is obtained with most razors. This will keep the cut hair from returning to the skin and also bumping from irritation while shaving. EASY SAVE which is listed on this site will do that. It also cleans the pores which helps in acne condiions. It is medicated so this makes all tpes of shaving feel more comfortable. You will find more information a web site listed elsewhere on this site.
I recently started shaving my head, and I have found that the style makes me look more my age (25) than the 17-18 I look with hair, especially with the new fu-man-chu I adopted! I use the 4 blade system and it works terrific, although I think I am going to try Nair or epil-stop.
